A Day in the Life of a Recruiter: Anita Moren

Anita - Day in the Life of a Recruiter

Hello! My name is Anita Moren, and I’m a Senior Recruiter and Coach for Goodwin Recruiting. I joined Goodwin four years ago after a long career in the hospitality industry, traveling the world to open and operate hotels and spas, after which I decided to leverage my experience hiring the right people to become a professional recruiter. Now I have a wonderful life with my husband in Phoenix, AZ, and I’m here to show you what a typical day is like for me.

5:30 a.m.: It’s time to get up and at them! I love living in Arizona, but the summer afternoons can get pretty warm, so I quickly check my phone for any urgent emails before heading out on my morning walk. Since I have many partners on the east coast, getting up early also gives me more overlap with the start of their business days. When I finish my walk, I still have time for a cup of coffee before pulling my hair back and firing up my laptop.

7:30 a.m.: By now, my workday is in full swing. I’m reviewing resumes for any interesting candidates and calling clients to check in and see how things are going. I like to connect with my clients early, especially if they’re located on the east coast. Having worked in operations, I know how inconvenient it can be to receive calls during peak hours. That’s why I make sure to work around their schedules.

10:30 a.m.: One thing I love about Goodwin Recruiting is the supportive environment among all the recruiting partners. While I am running my own business, there is a lot of collaboration going on. I like to check in with any partners who have open jobs that I have found great candidates for and get an update, or connect with partners who have submitted candidates for my jobs and let them know what is going on in the process.

1:00 p.m.: I’m reviewing my list of candidates to see who is going on interviews and when. If they’ve already gone on the interview, I like to follow up with them to hear how things went. I also spend some time helping my candidates prepare for upcoming interviews. Some of the candidates I work with haven’t interviewed for 10-15 years. I can sympathize with this since I hadn’t interviewed for over two decades before I partnered with Goodwin Recruiting! Interview prep is an important part of what I do, not only because I like making connections between clients and candidates but also because I know that some of the strongest candidates in operations know how to do the job but need help learning how to show their best self and talk about what they do and what they’ve accomplished.

2:30 p.m.: I like to allocate at least an hour every day for client sourcing and another for candidate sourcing. I spend this time reading articles and checking LinkedIn for any developments of note, calling prospects to see if they have any openings they’re struggling to fill, or calling current clients to check how a recent placement is working out. Sometimes I can do this work all at once, and other days it fills in the cracks between my other tasks. But it is an important part of cultivating a strong network.

3:30-4:30 p.m.: I like to get as much of my desk work done by this time as I can, so I have the chance to get out and meet clients or friends or even go to the gym. As a contractor, I enjoy having the flexibility to plan my work schedule around some of the activities that I enjoy doing on a day-to-day basis. My son, who is now 19 and in his second year of college, was very active in sports during high school. When I first joined Goodwin Recruiting, I was able to adjust my schedule and attend every one of his games! Just recently, I was also able to enjoy an extended visit with my father in Canada while continuing my work and not missing a beat.

That pretty much sums up what a typical day looks like for me. I love the work that I do with Goodwin Recruiting and the flexibility it affords me. And even though I’ve completed four years as a recruiting partner, I consistently find myself pouring in more and more effort like it’s my first year. The harder you work, the more people you meet, the more interviews and placements you get, and the more lives you get to change. And while I also worked long hours in my operations career, today, it’s on my schedule and in the uniform of my choosing.
