Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO)

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience implementing and enforcing safety programs on projects of comparable size and complexity
  • OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety (required, within past 3 years)
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification (required)
  • EM 385-1-1 SSHO Competent Person training, CSP, or CHST certification (preferred)
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or related field (preferred)
  • Must be available by phone within one hour during and after government working hours
  • Strong understanding of OSHA, EM 385-1-1, and DoD safety standards

Must Haves

  • Develop and maintain the Accident Prevention Plan (APP), Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs)
  • Conduct daily site safety inspections, hazard analyses, and toolbox talks
  • Serve as the primary on-site authority for all safety compliance matters
  • Stop unsafe work activities and coordinate immediate corrective actions
  • Investigate and report all incidents and near misses; lead root cause analyses
  • Oversee subcontractor compliance and maintain comprehensive safety documentation

Preferred Background & Skills

  • Prior experience supporting U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or other federal contracts
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with a proactive approach to building safety culture
  • Familiarity with facility maintenance, construction, or engineering environments
  • Proven ability to deliver safety training and maintain compliance across multiple worksites
  • Skilled in trend analysis, reporting, and continuous improvement in safety metrics
