Job Title: School Nurse – Private school
Location: Belmont, California
Reports To: Third Rock MD, CMO and Director of Operations
Position Summary
The School Nurse is a licensed healthcare professional, LPN or RN, responsible for managing the health and well-being of special needs students and staff within the private school setting.
This includes direct care, case management, compliance with California state regulations, and collaboration with faculty, parents, and community health providers. The nurse ensures a safe, healthy learning environment through health promotion and disease prevention.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Clinical Care ● Provide first aid, emergency treatment, and routine care for illness and injury.
- Manage and administer student medications per physician and parent guidelines.
- Develop and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Care Plans (ECPs).
- Monitor and manage chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, seizures).
Health Compliance
- Maintain student health records and immunization records
- Ensure compliance with FERPA and HIPAA privacy standards.
Health Promotion
- Promote healthy practices and provide education to students, staff, and families on topics such as hygiene, nutrition, sexual health, mental wellness, and substance use.
- Support and participate in health and wellness programs and school-wide initiatives.
Safety & Emergency Planning
- Develop and maintain the school’s emergency health response protocols.
- Assist in planning and health support for school field trips and special events.
Parent and Staff Communication
- Serve as the primary contact for parent concerns regarding student health.
- Communicate health concerns, illness outbreaks, and other updates as appropriate.
- Consult with staff on how to best support students with medical conditions or limitations.
Required qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred. LPN is acceptable
- License: Active Registered Nurse (RN) or LPN license in the State of California in good standing.
- School Nurse Services Credential (preferred or ability to obtain).
- Certifications: Current BLS, and PALS
- Experience: Prior experience in pediatric, public health, or school nursing is preferred.
- Desired Certifications: Clear School Nurse Services Credential ○ Public Health Nurse (PHN)
- Desired Skills & Competencies ● Strong clinical judgment and emergency response skills.
- Experience working with special needs children with disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is preferred.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
- Proficient with Google Workspace/MS Office. Working Conditions
Schedule – Hours – Location
- Monday through Friday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm, during the school year
- The school year is anticipated to be between 170 and 190 days
- Work primarily takes place on campus during school hours.
- Workspace will be a shared space in the school, and access to a care vehicle will be available during school hours.
- Occasional travel for field trips and school-sponsored activities.
