Fleet Mechanic Requirements & Qualifications

  • Ability to diagnose, service, and repair commercial related equipment
  • Working knowledge of DOT / FMCSA inspection standards and safety requirements
  • Experience performing FHWA/BIT inspections and identifying safety-related defects
  • Must provide own tools in accordance with company requirements
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain and maintain DOT certification
  • Ability to work independently while following established repair and safety standards
  • Strong attention to detail, safety, and quality workmanship
  • Brake systems (including brake inspections and adjustments)
  • Air systems (air lines, valves, chambers)
  • Electrical systems (lighting, wiring, troubleshooting)
  • Suspension systems
  • Landing gear repairs
  • Tires and wheel-end maintenance
  • Swing doors and roll-up doors
  • Floors and side panels
  • Preventive maintenance inspections
  • Minor welding and torch work

Fleet Mechanic Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Perform fleet-specific repairs, including completing FHWA inspections and brake system repairs
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair air lines, electrical/lighting systems, suspension components, doors, and flooring
  • Conduct routine welding and related mechanical work as needed
  • Document completed repairs and ensure all work adheres to safety regulations and quality standards
  • Maintain tools, workspace cleanliness, and responsible use of equipment
  • Communicate effectively with team members and vendors to support seamless yard operations
