A fast-growing, cloud-native technology organization is seeking a Senior Database Administrator (DBA) to lead the design, administration, and optimization of Azure Managed SQL database environments supporting highly transactional production systems. This role serves as the database subject matter expert, partnering with engineering, data, and platform teams to ensure database performance, scalability, security, and reliability. The Senior DBA will play a key role in shaping database architecture, improving query performance, supporting production systems, and implementing best practices across the organization. This is an opportunity to work in a high-impact technical leadership role supporting modern cloud-based infrastructure and large-scale data environments.
Key Responsibilities
Database Architecture & Administration
- Design, administer, and maintain Azure SQL Database / Managed Instance environments supporting mission-critical applications.
- Ensure databases are scalable, secure, and optimized for high-volume workloads.
Performance Optimization
- Monitor and tune database performance through query optimization, indexing strategies, and execution plan analysis.
- Conduct capacity planning and proactively address performance bottlenecks.
Production Support
- Provide hands-on support for production environments including incident response, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis.
- Implement preventative measures to ensure high availability and reliability.
Security & Compliance
- Enforce database security best practices including access control, encryption, auditing, and compliance standards.
Query & Developer Support
- Partner with engineering teams to review and optimize T-SQL queries and data access patterns.
- Provide guidance on efficient database design and usage.
Schema & Deployment Management
- Manage schema changes, data migrations, and version control across development, staging, and production environments.
Automation & Operational Efficiency
- Automate database administration tasks related to deployments, monitoring, and maintenance.
Monitoring & Observability
- Build and maintain dashboards, alerts, and monitoring systems to track database health, performance, and capacity.
Data & Analytics Support
- Support data archiving and analytical workloads, including integration with Azure data services and data pipelines.
Technical Leadership
- Act as a trusted advisor to engineering leadership on database architecture, performance strategy, and best practices.
- Document database architecture, operational procedures, and standards.
Qualifications
Required Experience
- 8+ years of experience as a Database Administrator in production environments.
- Extensive hands-on experience with Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance.
- Advanced expertise in T-SQL, indexing, query optimization, and performance tuning.
- Experience supporting high-throughput, highly transactional systems.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and experience resolving complex database issues in production.
- Experience automating database operations and deployments using scripts or DevOps pipelines.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience).
Preferred Experience
- Azure data services such as Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Factory, or Azure Table Storage.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines for database deployments.
- Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, or Application Insights.
- Exposure to data warehousing, data lake, or analytics architectures.
- Microsoft Azure certifications (e.g., Azure Database Administrator Associate or Azure Solutions Architect).
- Experience leveraging AI-assisted tools to improve database operations and performance analysis.
