Crane Operator – Scrap Yard

The Crane Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating material-handling cranes to move, load, and sort ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal throughout the yard. This role directly supports production, shipping/receiving, and processing goals while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate hydraulic material handlers (magnet or grapple) to move, stack, and load/unload scrap metal
• Load shredders, shear lines, balers, and downstream conveyors with appropriate material flow
• Sort and separate scrap to prevent contamination between ferrous and non-ferrous streams
• Load outgoing trailers, railcars, or barges to weight and quality specifications
• Perform daily pre-shift inspections and minor maintenance on assigned crane
• Coordinate movements with scale house, torch crews, and ground spotters to maintain traffic flow and safety
• Maintain constant awareness of surroundings to prevent equipment or property damage
• Record loads and production counts as required by supervisors
• Assist with yard clean-up and equipment relocation as needed

Qualifications

• Prior experience operating material handlers or cranes in a scrap, recycling, or heavy industrial environment
• Valid crane or material-handler certification/license (as required)
• Strong knowledge of rigging, lifting, and safety procedures
• Ability to work in all weather conditions and lift up to 50 lbs
• Excellent hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and communication skills
• Commitment to safety, punctuality, and teamwork

Work Environment

• Outdoor scrap yard environment
• Exposure to noise, dust, sharp metal, and heavy machinery traffic
• Requires wearing PPE (hard hat, steel-toe boots, high-visibility vest, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection)
