We are seeking a seasoned Chief Public Defender to lead the county’s public defense team. This department head-level position provides oversight for all public defense operations, including supervising assistant defenders and representing indigent defendants in criminal proceedings. The role offers significant autonomy, professional influence, and a strong public service mission in a rural setting.

Chief Public Defender Qualifications:

  • Possession of a license to practice law in the State of New York
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience practicing law
  • Strong criminal defense background and courtroom experience
  • Demonstrated leadership and management ability

Chief Public Defender Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the operations of the Public Defender’s Office
  • Represent indigent clients in criminal cases in various courts
  • Supervise assistant public defenders and support staff
  • Manage ethical issues, conflicts, and case distribution
  • Collaborate with the judiciary, law enforcement, and county leadership
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
