Logistics Manager
Position Summary
The Logistics Manager is responsible for coordinating the efficient movement of scrap materials and equipment between supplier yards, processing facilities, and consuming mills. This role ensures materials are transported safely, on schedule, and in the most cost-effective manner while supporting the operational needs of company yards and supplier network.
Key Responsibilities
- Schedule and coordinate the movement of scrap materials and processing equipment between company yards, suppliers, and consuming facilities.
- Utilize both company-owned trucks and independent owner-operators to support daily transportation needs.
- Determine the most efficient transportation method based on safety, availability, and cost.
- Coordinate weekly scrap movement with yard managers and customers based on commodity demand and tonnage requirements.
- Work closely with dispatch to build and manage daily shipment schedules.
- Maximize freight efficiency across internal fleet assets and dedicated third-party haulers.
- Negotiate freight rates with owner-operators and outside trucking firms.
- Recruit, onboard, and manage independent owner-operators as needed to support operational demand.
- Oversee performance of dedicated contract haulers and monitor load performance against dispatch schedules.
- Monitor shipment weights and ensure efficient loading practices.
- Maintain daily communication with feeder yards to identify available commodities ready for shipment.
- Coordinate roll-off container scheduling to support supplier and industrial customer needs.
- Maintain regular communication with company drivers and external carriers.
- Manage high daily call volume and email communication related to freight coordination.
- Review and approve company driver hours weekly.
- Reconcile and approve invoices from dedicated haulers, including detention charges.
- Coordinate landfill shipments and track ASR deliveries.
- Maintain records for owner-operator agreements, insurance certificates, trailer inspections, and vehicle documentation.
- Ensure company vehicles and drivers maintain proper documentation and required safety equipment.
- Conduct monthly safety meetings with company drivers.
- Source truck brokers and additional transportation support for longer-haul non-ferrous shipments when required.
- Monitor internal freight costs associated with company-owned trucks.
