The Assistant Director of Engineering oversees and ensures the effective operation and functionality of the entire hotel/resort property. This includes physical buildings, grounds, and critical systems such as mechanical, electrical, and HVAC. As a management position, the role is responsible for assisting with budget management, capital projects, preventative maintenance, and energy conservation to maintain the property’s high standards of safety, comfort, and guest satisfaction. This position reports directly to the Director of Engineering.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Planning: Develop and implement engineering strategies that align with company objectives, contributing engineering insights and analysis to inform strategic direction.
  • Operational Excellence: Establish and monitor engineering operational strategies by evaluating industry trends, setting performance standards, and designing systems to support efficiency and quality.
  • Resource Management: Determine, plan, and oversee strategies for production, productivity, quality, and customer service to optimize operations and guest experience.
  • Financial Oversight: Develop and manage engineering budgets by estimating costs, forecasting future needs, analyzing financial data, and aligning resources with strategic goals.
  • Best Practices Implementation: Establish policies, procedures, and workflows to ensure efficient operations and compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Project Management: Lead engineering projects by conducting feasibility assessments, defining resource requirements, analyzing technology options, and ensuring projects meet budgetary constraints.
  • Utility Management: Ensure uninterrupted operation of utilities through effective provision and backup systems.
  • Technical Analysis: Provide actionable insights by analyzing operational issues, gathering technical data, and summarizing trends to drive informed decision-making.
  • Continuous Learning: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of regulations and industry codes; engage in professional development through networking and training opportunities.
  • Team Leadership: Oversee engineering team by setting clear values and policies, conducting recruitment and training, providing coaching and performance feedback, and ensuring high performance across the team.

Basic Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent experience in hotels or resorts
  • Plumbing License, Certified Pool & Spa (CPO) License, Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) Certification
  • Minimum of 2 years managing multiple technical teams on engineering projects
  • At least 1 year of senior management experience
  • Proficiency in engineering design and project management

Desired Qualifications & Traits

  • Previous leadership experience within a resort or hotel setting
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements, including ergonomics, emergency response, injury prevention, and hazard communication programs
  • Ability to develop, implement, and monitor programs that ensure safety and regulatory compliance
