Drilling Engineer

Dallas, TX

About the Role

An independent oil and natural gas operator is seeking an experienced Drilling Engineer to support the planning and execution of onshore horizontal drilling programs. This role focuses on well design, operational oversight, contractor coordination, and continuous improvement across active drilling operations. The position is hybrid, with four days per week onsite in the Dallas, TX office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed well engineering designs, drilling programs, and cost estimates.
  • Prepare AFEs and operational procedures for drilling activities.
  • Identify and implement drilling best practices to improve performance and efficiency.
  • Support vendor selection and pricing negotiations by evaluating bids and contractor performance.
  • Coordinate multiple contractors to optimize capital efficiency and minimize cycle time from spud to first production.
  • Maintain awareness of SIMOPS considerations in active operating areas.
  • Manage drilling rig schedules and ensure timely execution of planned activities.
  • Review daily drilling reports, maintain well records, and prepare quarterly activity reviews.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to secure required permits.
  • Contribute to setting drilling objectives and identifying operational risks and opportunities.
  • Recommend and integrate new technologies and process improvements.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to colleagues on drilling-related issues.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date technical knowledge through training, publications, and professional networks.
  • Support HSE initiatives and promote a safe work environment.
  • Conduct periodic field visits for rig inspections, pre‑spud meetings, and contractor evaluations.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as needed.

Required Qualifications

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • Well control certification preferred.

Experience

  • 5–8 years of drilling engineering experience with an active E&P operator.
  • Strong background in horizontal development programs.
  • Preferred experience in shale basins such as Eagle Ford, Haynesville, Utica, or Marcellus.
  • At least 6 months of on‑rig experience preferred.

Technical Competencies

  • Experience with unconventional assets (tight gas sands, shales).
  • Strong knowledge of directional drilling.
  • Understanding of basic well control and underbalanced drilling practices.
  • Proficiency in drilling engineering principles, techniques, and field application.
  • Solid grasp of commercial and business aspects of drilling operations.

Professional Skills

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to collaborate with field personnel, vendors, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong computer skills and comfort with technical software.

Work Environment
