Sous Chef Requirements & Qualifications

  • 2+ years in a salaried Sous Chef role within an upscale or fine-dining restaurant.
  • Experience in scratch kitchens, with a strong command of classical techniques and modern presentations.
  • Proven track record in high-volume restaurants with annual sales of at least $3M.
  • ServSafe certification or equivalent food safety credentials required.
  • Strong organization and people management abilities; adept at inventory, scheduling, purchasing, and private dining coordination.
  • Must pass a background check prior to employment.

Sous Chef Preferred Background & Skills

  • Demonstrated success in mentoring and leading tenured teams, contributing to a positive, supportive culture.
  • Experience managing vendor relationships and food cost strategies in a high-standard, reputable restaurant.
  • Ability to foster collaboration between kitchen and front-of-house staff.

Sous Chef Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily kitchen operations to ensure high standards for flavor, presentation, and consistency.
  • Lead by example on the line, executing advanced techniques and upholding scratch-cooking principles.
  • Train and mentor culinary staff, promoting discipline, growth, and hospitality.
  • Collaborate on seasonal menu development, private dining, and special events.
  • Oversee inventory management and product quality, ensuring cost targets are met.
  • Enforce kitchen professionalism, sanitation, and safety standards.
  • Step in for the Executive Chef as needed, taking full operational responsibility.
