How to Identify and Report Phishing Scams

Job Seekers: Take Caution!

If you received an unsolicited WhatsApp or text message saying they are a Goodwin Recruiting recruiter, please take caution. It’s been brought to our attention that there is a scam preying on job seekers, where individuals are sending messages posing as a recruiter from Goodwin Recruiting.

Unfortunately, this is a common scam that affects thousands of recruiters worldwide. Scammers are now increasingly posing as Goodwin Recruiting to scam unsuspecting job seekers. It can take many forms, primarily on WhatsApp or via text messages, but can be on other social media platforms as well through email.

Does Goodwin Recruiting Use WhatsApp?

The Goodwin Recruiting team does not use WhatsApp, unless a candidate specifically requests we communicate via that method. This, however, is not the norm.

Please know that we will never reach out to you using an outside email address that does not end in “@goodwinrecruiting.com”, and we NEVER charge job seekers for our services. If a person claiming to be a recruiter with Goodwin Recruiting asks you, as a candidate, for payment or any bank account details, that is not us. Be sure to review their contact details thoroughly to verify whether it is from the Goodwin Recruiting team.

How to Identify a Scam Message

If you received a potential scam message from someone pretending to be with Goodwin Recruiting, here are some simple red flags to look for:

  • The email does not include @goodwinrecruiting.com: If the message comes from an email address other than “@goodwinrecruiting.com”, it is not coming from Goodwin Recruiting. As an example, @goodwinrecruiting.co (missing the m), would NOT be from our team.
  • It is a message on WhatsApp: We very rarely use WhatsApp to communicate with candidates. It can be used by our recruiters to reach out to candidates outside of the United States, but it is not common.
  • It contains an unidentified link: If the message contains a link where you hover over and it does not match the anticipated URL, this is an indicator of a scam message. You should avoid clicking the link.
  • The message seems suspicious: If you are receiving a job offer that seems suspicious, it probably is! If there are spelling and grammatical errors and/or they are asking for money or personal details (for example: social security number, bank account information, credit card, financial information, direct deposit details) - these are all red flags.

How to Report Fake Job Offer Scams

We want to thank everyone that has brought these communications to our attention. If you have received a suspicious message stating they are a recruiter with us but they do not have an email ending in “@goodwinrecruiting.com”, please do not engage.

You can block and/or report the message by forwarding them to reportphishing@apwg.org. And for job scams, specifically, you can report them at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and select “Job, investment, money-making opportunity”.
