Tips for getting a professional headshot that feels authentic and conveys the image you want
By Dee-Ann Durbin
Goodwin Recruiting’s Area Director of Recruiting, Emily Lauro, and Director of Marketing, Jenny Battershell, were recently included in an Associated Press article about how candidates can create more authentic headshot photos. Author, Dee-Ann Durbin, noted, candidates need to make sure their headshot photo is recognizable, to which Lauro explained:
LAURO: “Look like you on your best professional day and not a completely different person,” Lauro said. “They’re not meant to be how photogenic you are. They’re meant to be your real likeness and image.”
Durbin went on to share insights for candidates, on best practices of when and where to share their headshot photos:
BATTERSHELL: “It’s generally not a good idea to put a headshot on your resume. Resume designs should be simple and straightforward. Photos can confuse automated resume-tracking systems, which are designed to scan text.”
LAURO: “If someone is open to work and they don’t have a photo and their qualifications line up with the job, I’m reaching out to them anyway. Some people are more social media savvy than others.”
Lauro went on to share insights on A.I. headshots, noting, “You want a potential employer to focus on your experience and qualifications, not on whether your photo is authentic.”
