We are seeking a Patent Agent (Mechanical Engineering) with patent prosecution experience and a technical background in mechanical, electrical, or computer science disciplines to join a nationally recognized corporate practice in Boston, MA or Washington, DC. The ideal candidate will have experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications, conducting freedom-to-operate analyses, and advising on IP strategy for complex technologies.

Patent Agent Responsibilities

  • Draft and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications
  • Conduct freedom-to-operate and clearance analyses
  • Analyze scientific literature, patents, and technical disclosures
  • Prepare responses to USPTO and international office actions
  • Perform patentability and prior art searches
  • Collaborate with inventors and clients to understand innovations
  • Develop IP strategies and support portfolio development
  • Conduct technical analysis comparing inventions to existing technologies
  • Participate in examiner interviews and provide strategic recommendations
  • Present technical concepts and legal arguments clearly to internal teams and clients

Patent Agent Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or related field
  • USPTO registration (or eligibility) preferred
  • Experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications
  • Strong technical writing and analytical skills
  • Ability to interpret and communicate complex scientific concepts
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Collaborative mindset with strong interpersonal skills
