Grocery Store Director Responsibilities
- Lead a high-volume grocery operation, driving sales performance, expense control, and inventory accuracy across a store generating up to $30M annually
- Build and maintain an enthusiastic, guest-centered culture by developing leaders, setting clear expectations, and ensuring consistent accountability
- Conduct frequent, detailed store walks to evaluate conditions, uphold operational and food safety standards, and identify improvement opportunities
- Coach and grow a multi-level leadership team through structured development plans, performance reviews, and ongoing feedback
- Oversee labor planning, staffing needs, and talent development for a workforce of 100–200 team members
Grocery Store Director Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of full-store leadership experience in grocery or food-focused retail (or large-format retail with significant food operations)
- Experience leading teams of at least 100 employees, with proven success managing multiple leaders and departments simultaneously
- Strong financial and operational acumen, including budgeting, labor management, shrink reduction, and execution of sales-driving initiatives
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate positive morale, foster a guest-focused culture, and build high-performing leadership teams
