Controller Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting required; CPA or MBA preferred.
• Minimum 7+ years of accounting experience, including 3+ years in a management or Controller-level role.
• Proven success in financial reporting, budgeting, and internal control development.
• Experience in a law firm or other professional services firm preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
• High ethical standards and professionalism in all financial and personnel matters.

Controller Day-to-Day Responsibilities

• Manage the firm’s accounting systems, personnel, and financial processes.
• Oversee all general accounting functions, including chart of accounts, general ledger, billing, A/R, A/P, fixed assets, bank reconciliation, and client trust accounts.
• Supervise monthly financial reporting, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and actionable analysis.
• Serve as the first reviewer of monthly financial statements before submission to the Director of Finance.
• Monitor and analyze unbilled time, disbursements, and receivables; collaborate with timekeepers to resolve discrepancies.
• Oversee all escrow accounting functions to ensure proper safeguarding of trust funds.
• Manage the monthly and year-end close processes, ensuring all deadlines and audit requirements are met.
• Maintain and update procedural manuals and financial system documentation.
• Establish and enforce internal controls to protect firm assets and ensure compliance.
• Prepare and analyze special financial reports as requested.
