Position Overview

The Lead Veterinarian is responsible for leading the veterinary medical team and ensuring that every patient receives exceptional care while providing a welcoming and supportive environment for clients. This position partners closely with the Hospital Office Manager to drive both medical and operational excellence. The Hospital Medical Leader represents the mission and commitments of the hospital to all clients, veterinarians, and hospital partners.

Essential Job Functions

  • Leadership & Management
  • Lead and mentor the hospital’s veterinary team.
  • Partner with the Hospital Office Manager to provide cohesive and collaborative leadership.
  • Coach and develop veterinarians to continuously improve clinical skills, communication, and teamwork.
  • Ensure full compliance with medical SOPs, state practice acts, and applicable regulations.
  • Participate in candidate interviews, hiring, and onboarding of veterinarians.
  • Develop veterinarian schedules and ensure coverage and continuity of care.
  • Review hospital performance, including medical quality and financial outcomes, and partner with leadership to achieve business goals.
  • Analyze hospital P&L reports to drive revenue growth through efficiency and quality.
  • Conduct reviews of medical records and provide feedback to elevate standards of care.
  • Address client concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Maintain DEA compliance and oversee controlled substances.
  • Foster a strong culture of safety for clients, team members, and patients.

Clinical Care

  • Perform physical exams, diagnose and treat diseases, and provide preventive care tailored to each patient’s lifestyle and needs.
  • Develop complete problem-based medical plans including diagnostics, treatment, and follow-up care.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for all patients.
  • Perform routine and complex surgeries, including spays/neuters, mass removals, exploratory procedures, and more.
  • Conduct dental examinations, radiographic evaluations, and perform simple and complex extractions.
  • Manage hospitalized patients, create thorough treatment plans, and ensure seamless transitions for overnight or referral care.

Other Duties

  • Participate in rounds at shift changes.
  • Share knowledge to elevate the team’s skill set and care standards.
  • Maintain hospital permits, vendor accounts, and compliance certifications.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Supervision & Collaboration

The Lead – Veterinarian reports to the Area Medical Director for clinical oversight and guidance. Collaboration, professionalism, and mentorship are key expectations within the hospital environment.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent) from an AVMA-accredited institution.
  • Active state veterinary license (or ability to obtain prior to start date).
  • 1–3+ years of clinical experience required; previous leadership or mentoring experience preferred.
  • Current DEA license and Controlled Substance License (or ability to obtain).
  • USDA Category I Accreditation (or completion within 2 months of hire).
  • Proficiency in anesthesia, surgery, and dentistry (canine and feline).
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Compassionate, adaptable, and team-oriented with a professional demeanor.

Work Environment

This role operates within a full-service veterinary hospital. Duties require frequent standing, kneeling, bending, and lifting up to 30 lbs. Regular interaction with clients, team members, and pets is essential to success in this role.
