Database Application Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking a Database Application Engineer – a programmer with strong expertise in SQL, stored procedures, query optimization, and database design. This role sits between database design and application behavior, which requires a successful candidate to be comfortable in at least one application language. This role is a programmer, not just a SQL writer.
The Database Application Engineer will help build a database-centered application architecture, optimize performance, design efficient schemas, and mentor other developers in good database practices. Strong candidates will understand stored procedure tuning, execution plans, indexing, JSON in SQL, window functions, and practical schema design. MySQL and AWS experience are strong pluses, as are TypeScript/JavaScript or PHP skills and strong communication ability.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and improve database tables and related structures
- Write and optimize stored procedures and SQL queries
- Diagnose slow queries and understand database statistics and execution plans
- Create data models that are both correct and fast
- Work with JSON data inside the database where appropriate
- Define good patterns for how the application interacts with the database
- Review other developers' database work and help teach good database practices
- Prevent performance, locking, and concurrency problems before they become production issues
Required Qualifications
- Stored Procedure Optimization – Ability to tune a procedure, inspect performance metrics, and understand what the database is doing internally.
- Strong SQL and Query Design – Write queries correctly and efficiently, including:
- Choosing the right query pattern for the problem
- Using NOT EXISTS / EXISTS where appropriate
- Avoiding unnecessary nested aggregate subqueries
- Understanding joins, filtering, grouping, and set-based logic
- Using window functions like DENSE_RANK() and similar tools when appropriate
- Working with JSON data in the database
- Good Database and Table Design:Indexing strategy
- Normalization vs selective denormalization
- When some redundancy improves performance
- Parent/child and subtype/subclass-style table design
- Understand how schema choices affect performance and maintainability
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with MySQL
- Experience with AWS
- Experience with TypeScript/JavaScript or PHP
- Strong communication skills, since this person will help raise the database skill level of other developers
- Ability to mentor developers who are newer to database-centered application design
- Understanding of transactions, locking, and concurrency
- Ability to read and explain execution plans clearly
- Practical judgment, not just textbook knowledge
- Ability to balance correctness, maintainability, and performance
- Comfort working in an architecture where the database is a major part of the application layer
