Construction Project Engineer Requirements and Qualifications

Must Haves

  • 2+ years of project engineering, field engineering, or project coordination experience within heavy civil construction
  • Experience supporting earthwork, grading, excavation, underground utilities, or site development projects
  • Strong understanding of construction plans, specifications, contracts, and project documentation
  • Ability to prepare, track, and manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, and material procurement
  • Experience coordinating with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, suppliers, inspectors, and clients
  • Ability to review civil plans and identify scope conflicts, constructability concerns, and missing information
  • Experience tracking project costs, quantities, production, and budget performance
  • Ability to maintain accurate daily reports, meeting minutes, logs, and project records
  • Strong understanding of project schedules, sequencing, and critical deadlines
  • Ability to support subcontractor coordination and verify compliance with project requirements
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced construction environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and construction project management software
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as needed

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Support the project manager and superintendent with the daily administration and execution of assigned projects
  • Prepare, submit, and track RFIs, submittals, change orders, purchase orders, and subcontract agreements
  • Review construction drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, and contract documents
  • Identify potential scope gaps, conflicts, delays, and cost impacts
  • Coordinate material deliveries, equipment needs, subcontractors, and project documentation
  • Track installed quantities, labor production, equipment utilization, and project costs
  • Assist with schedule development, look-ahead planning, and progress updates
  • Participate in project meetings, site walks, inspections, and owner or client coordination
  • Maintain project logs, meeting minutes, daily reports, and document-control systems
  • Assist with monthly billing, cost forecasting, and change-order documentation
  • Support quality-control and safety initiatives throughout the project
  • Coordinate with estimating and preconstruction teams during project turnover
  • Assist with project closeout, punch lists, as-built drawings, warranties, and final documentation
  • Build productive working relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, inspectors, and internal teams

Construction Project Engineer Preferred Background and Skills

  • Experience working for a self-performing earthwork or heavy civil contractor
  • Experience supporting large commercial or residential site development projects
  • Knowledge of grading, excavation, import and export operations, erosion control, and underground utilities
  • Familiarity with California prevailing wage and Davis-Bacon requirements
  • Experience with HCSS, Procore, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or similar construction software
  • Experience reviewing survey data, quantity reports, and civil construction drawings
  • Field experience working alongside superintendents and craft teams
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field
  • Engineer-in-Training certification is a plus
  • Strong interest in growing into a Project Manager role
