Scrap Metal Buyer

Position Summary

The Scrap Metal Buyer is responsible for purchasing ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals from industrial accounts, commercial businesses, peddlers, demolition contractors, and other suppliers. This role focuses on developing supplier relationships, evaluating material quality, negotiating pricing, monitoring market conditions, and ensuring profitable purchasing decisions that support company goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Purchase ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals from existing and prospective suppliers.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with industrial, commercial, and individual scrap suppliers.
  • Evaluate, inspect, and grade scrap materials to determine quality, classification, and value.
  • Negotiate pricing, contracts, and purchasing agreements based on market conditions and company objectives.
  • Monitor scrap metal market trends, pricing fluctuations, and industry developments.
  • Coordinate material deliveries, transportation logistics, and inventory flow with operations personnel.
  • Maintain accurate purchasing records, supplier documentation, and transaction reports.
  • Collaborate with yard, scale, and operations teams to ensure efficient material processing and inventory management.
  • Identify new business opportunities and generate additional scrap purchasing volume.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, environmental regulations, and safety standards.
  • Resolve supplier concerns and maintain high levels of customer satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred.
  • Previous experience in scrap metal recycling, metal purchasing, commodities trading, or industrial sales preferred.
  • Knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, grading standards, and recycling operations.
  • Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to analyze market pricing and make informed purchasing decisions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and purchasing or inventory management systems.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

Preferred Experience

  • Scrap metal buying or recycling industry experience.
  • Industrial sales or account management experience.
  • Knowledge of transportation logistics and freight coordination.
  • Experience working with foundries, mills, demolition contractors, manufacturers, or industrial accounts.
