Research & Development Engineer – Kankakee, IL

A well-established manufacturer in the agricultural equipment sector is seeking a talented Research & Development Engineer to join a collaborative team focused on designing and developing innovative aftermarket components. This is a hands-on opportunity to drive product improvement and bring new solutions to market while working closely with experienced engineers and production teams.

Research & Development Engineer Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or agricultural engineering
  • 10+ years of hands-on engineering experience, from concept through product introduction
  • In-depth knowledge of manufacturing techniques, including iron castings and fabrications
  • Strong metallurgy background, focusing on carbon steels and heat-treat processes
  • 5+ years experience with SolidWorks or CREO
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn 3D printing and reverse engineering analysis software
  • Proven team player with strong communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated initiative and creative problem-solving ability

Research & Development Engineer Preferred Background & Skills

  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software
  • Background in the development of complex systems such as ground engagement tools
  • Knowledge of dimensional tolerance stack-ups, especially for bearings and housings
  • Exposure to automation projects and work cell development
  • Ability to identify and implement strategies to decrease time to market
  • Hands-on experience with worksite machinery

Research & Development Engineer Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Design and reverse engineer agricultural machinery components
  • Conduct rigorous product testing to ensure quality and performance
  • Evaluate new product opportunities and contribute to feasibility studies
  • Collaborate closely with manufacturing to transition designs efficiently into production
  • Provide technical guidance and mentor junior team members across departments
  • Support customer service and address technical inquiries or challenges
  • Manage project schedules and priorities, ensuring timely delivery
  • Assist with tooling design and fixture fabrication during new product launches
