Senior Highway Transportation Engineer Requirements & Qualifications
- B.S. in Civil Engineering or related field; M.S. preferred
- Professional Engineering License (PE) with 20+ years of progressive highway and roadway design experience
- Advanced proficiency in MicroStation or OpenRoads and familiarity with NYSDOT design standards
- Experience as senior technical reviewer, design authority, or Engineer of Record on complex transportation projects
- Strong engineering judgment, organizational skills, and collaborative mindset
Senior Highway Transportation Engineer Preferred Background & Skills
- Extensive experience with roadway reconstruction, corridor improvements, rehabilitation, and intersection upgrades
- Ability to independently manage complex design challenges and offer practical guidance
- Comfortable collaborating with state, municipal, regulatory, and subconsultant teams across multidisciplinary projects
- Skilled mentor capable of developing junior engineers and reinforcing quality standards
Senior Highway Transportation Engineer Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Lead highway design plans and construction cost estimates for new and rehabilitation projects
- Perform and oversee advanced geometric roadway design including alignments, profiles, grading, and interchange layouts
- Conduct senior technical reviews ensuring quality, constructability, and regulatory compliance per NYSDOT standards
- Support project managers with scope, schedule, budget, client and subconsultant coordination, and construction-phase inquiries
- Serve as Engineer of Record when appropriate and mentor junior engineers to strengthen team capability and design standards
