Environmental Health & Safety Manager

A recycling company is seeking an Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager to lead safety and environmental compliance across scrap metal yard and processing operations. This is a hands-on role with significant time spent in the yard, focused on protecting employees, maintaining regulatory compliance, and building a strong safety culture.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and enforce safety programs including lockout/tagout, hot work and torch cutting, powered industrial trucks, mobile equipment, machine guarding, confined space, fall protection, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, PPE, and hazard communication.
  • Conduct regular yard walks and safety audits, identify hazards, and ensure corrective actions are completed.
  • Manage traffic and pedestrian safety involving trucks, customers, and mobile equipment.
  • Coordinate exposure monitoring for lead, metal fumes, noise, and dust, including required medical surveillance.
  • Investigate injuries, near misses, and property-damage incidents; determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain OSHA 300/300A/301 records and oversee workers’ compensation and return-to-work programs.
  • Maintain SPCC plans and oversee proper oil and fluid handling.
  • Manage inbound material screening for radioactive sources, sealed containers, refrigerants/CFCs, mercury switches, batteries, PCBs, and other prohibited materials.
  • Oversee hazardous and universal waste identification, storage, manifests, and vendors.
  • Serve as the primary contact for OSHA, EPA, state environmental agencies, and fire department inspections.
  • Lead new-hire safety orientation, ongoing training, toolbox talks, safety committee meetings, and training documentation.
  • Coach supervisors and employees on safe work practices and accountability.
  • Track and report EHS metrics including TRIR, DART, near misses, audit findings, and corrective actions.
  • Manage the EHS budget, PPE program, outside consultants, emergency action plans, fire prevention plans, and drills.
  • Review new equipment, processes, and site changes for safety and environmental impact.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • EHS experience in heavy industry, including 2+ years leading a site safety program.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA General Industry standards (29 CFR 1910) and EPA programs including stormwater, SPCC, and hazardous waste.
  • Experience conducting incident investigations and implementing programs that reduce workplace injuries.
  • Strong communication and training skills with the ability to work effectively with both yard employees and management.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Experience in scrap metal, recycling, waste, foundry, steel, demolition, or a similar heavy industrial environment.
  • CSP, ASP, CHST, CIH, CHMM, OSHA 30, or OSHA 500/510 credentials.
  • Experience with radiation detection systems and stormwater sampling.
  • Familiarity with ReMA safety resources and RIOS certification.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Portuguese.
