The Logistics Manager is responsible for coordinating all transportation and material-flow activity — inbound scrap collection, yard-to-yard transfers, outbound shipments to mills/smelters/exporters, and container/rail/barge logistics where applicable. This role owns carrier relationships, fleet coordination (owned and third-party), scale house accuracy, and compliance with DOT and environmental regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and manage daily routing/dispatch for company trucks and contracted haulers picking up scrap from peddlers, industrial accounts, demolition sites, and municipal contracts
• Coordinate outbound shipments to mills, foundries, smelters, and export/container terminals; manage load scheduling to meet mill appointment windows and vessel cutoffs
• Negotiate and manage relationships with trucking companies, rail carriers, and steamship lines/freight forwarders for export containers
• Manage fleet maintenance schedules, DOT compliance (driver hours, vehicle inspections, hazmat where relevant), and driver safety programs
• Track freight costs per ton and identify opportunities to reduce cost-per-mile/cost-per-load
• Coordinate with yard operations and processing (shredder, baler, torch crews) to align inbound flow with processing capacity
• Manage permits, weight limits, and local ordinances for truck routing near residential areas or restricted roads
• Maintain relationships with commodity buyers regarding shipment timing and volume commitments
• Ensure compliance with EPA, state environmental, and OSHA regulations related to material handling and transport
• Supervise drivers (if in-house fleet)
• Manage logistics software

Qualifications

• 5+ years of logistics/transportation management experience; scrap metal, waste, aggregates, or bulk commodity industry strongly preferred
• Working knowledge of DOT regulations, hours-of-service rules, and commercial vehicle compliance
• Experience with export logistics (containerization, bill of lading)
• Familiarity with ferrous/non-ferrous grading and how it affects load planning
• Strong negotiation skills for freight rates and carrier contracts
• Proficiency with dispatch software, GPS fleet tracking, and Excel
• Ability to manage in a fast-paced, physically active yard environment
• CDL knowledge (not necessarily required to hold one) and understanding of truck weight/axle regulations
• Strong communication skills for coordinating between drivers, yard crew, sales, and mill/buyer contacts
