Transportation Engineer Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field required
- 5+ years of professional engineering experience with a focus on transportation engineering, or 6+ years without EIT
- EIT Registration required, or 6+ years of relevant experience
- Professional Engineer (PE) registration or ability to obtain within 6 months preferred
- Experience preparing construction plans and/or studies for roadway or traffic projects
- Proven ability to direct tasks and perform QA/QC
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD and/or MicroStation (or other engineering design software)
- Strong knowledge of DOT standards, permitting, and construction practices
- Valid state driver’s license or reliable transportation to project sites
Transportation Engineer Preferred Background & Skills
- Completed coursework in transportation engineering and/or highway design
- Experience with AutoTurn and GuideSIGN
- Strong data analysis, interpretation, and technical writing skills
- Knowledge of Federal and State ADA standards and guidelines
- Experience with grant application preparation
- Active participation in professional organizations
Transportation Engineer Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Execute technical engineering assignments across all phases of transportation and infrastructure projects
- Collaborate with project teams to develop innovative, sustainable transportation solutions
- Prepare engineering plans, reports, cost estimates, permits, maps, and graphics for client and public meetings
- Lead field reviews, data analysis, and stakeholder engagement efforts to inform design decisions
- Direct project tasks, monitor progress, and ensure technical accuracy and schedule adherence
- Provide mentorship to junior staff and help maintain quality assurance standards
- Support business development through proposal preparation and client communication
- Deliver technical presentations internally and externally
