YARD MANAGER

Position Overview

The Yard Manager oversees daily shredder yard operations, including production and maintenance teams, ensuring safety, efficiency, quality, and cost-effective performance. This role is responsible for meeting production goals, maintaining compliance with company policies, and supporting a high-performing industrial operation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of yard employees involved in scrap receiving, sorting, processing, and loading/unloading.
  • Train staff on safety procedures, equipment operation, and material identification.
  • Enforce all safety policies and maintain a safe working environment for employees, vendors, and customers.
  • Oversee production output, quality control, and operational efficiency.
  • Manage P&L performance and support budgeting and cost control.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, productivity, quality, and retention.
  • Conduct inventory counts and ensure accurate material tracking by grade.
  • Manage performance reviews, goal setting, and HR coordination for staffing needs.
  • Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance programs to reduce downtime.
  • Conduct accident investigations and enforce corrective actions when needed.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Experience & Qualifications

  • 10+ years in metals recycling industry.
  • 5+ years of shredder operations experience.
  • Experience managing teams in an industrial environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred (business a plus).

Skills & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of shredder yard equipment (cranes, loaders, forklifts, shears, balers).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, delegate, and manage multiple operational demands.
  • Understanding of heavy equipment operations and maintenance.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced industrial setting.
  • Strong commitment to safety and operational discipline.
  • Comfortable working in all weather and industrial conditions.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
