Senior Floodplain & Dam Engineering Lead

Our client is seeking a Senior Floodplain & Dam Engineering Lead to join its growing Water Resources team in the greater Washington, DC / Northern Virginia region. This individual will serve as a lead technical resource supporting floodplain and dam-related projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

The role offers the opportunity to work on a wide range of hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) modeling assignments involving FEMA and local floodplains, floodplain permitting, dam safety evaluations, dam breach analyses, and infrastructure improvements within regulated floodplain environments. Projects will include work associated with state-regulated dams in Virginia and Maryland.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong engineer looking to take on leadership responsibilities, mentor junior staff, and contribute to the continued growth of a highly collaborative water resources practice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead development and quality control of HEC-RAS hydraulic models
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses using GIS, survey, and as-built data
  • Prepare floodplain studies, CLOMR/LOMR packages, and permitting documentation
  • Conduct dam breach inundation studies, hazard assessments, and failure analyses
  • Support floodplain mapping and emergency action planning efforts
  • Assist with design of floodplain crossings and dam rehabilitation projects
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies and support permit approvals
  • Conduct field inspections and site visits as needed
  • Prepare technical reports and engineering documentation
  • Mentor junior engineers and support internal technical development
  • Manage multiple projects, schedules, and client deliverables

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • 5+ years of experience with HEC-RAS modeling and water resources engineering
  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
  • Experience with floodplain permitting and hydraulic modeling
  • Proficiency with GIS platforms such as ArcMap or similar software
  • Strong communication, organizational, and quality control skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM)
  • Experience with HEC-RAS 2D modeling
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar design software
