General Manager – Transfer & Recycling Operations

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced General Manager to lead transfer waste and metal recycling operations across multiple facilities. This role has overall responsibility for operational and financial performance, safety and environmental compliance, equipment reliability, employee development, and continuous improvement.

The ideal candidate is a visible, hands-on leader who understands industrial operations and can balance daily facility demands with long-term business objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day transfer and metal recycling operations across multiple facilities, ensuring strong safety, productivity, quality, service, and financial performance.
  • Manage and develop facility managers and supervisors, including staffing, training, performance management, accountability, and succession planning.
  • Own operating budgets and monitor labor, overtime, maintenance, transportation, disposal, equipment, and other operating costs.
  • Review financial and operational performance, establish goals, address performance gaps, and identify opportunities to improve profitability and efficiency.
  • Partner with EHS to ensure compliance with OSHA, environmental regulations, permits, stormwater requirements, and established safety programs.
  • Oversee equipment reliability, preventive maintenance, downtime, utilization, facility conditions, and capital equipment needs.
  • Manage the receiving, processing, storage, transfer, and shipment of recyclable materials and waste while monitoring production, inventory, material flow, quality, and facility capacity.
  • Coordinate with Transportation, Maintenance, Sales, HR, EHS, and other departments to support efficient operations.
  • Maintain key customer, supplier, contractor, and municipal relationships and resolve significant operational or service issues.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives involving workflows, equipment, technology, productivity, cost control, and operational processes.
  • Provide operational oversight and direction to the secondary transfer station through its facility manager.
  • Communicate operational, financial, staffing, safety, equipment, and compliance performance to senior leadership.
  • Participate in rotating Saturday management coverage and respond to operational needs as required.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of progressive management experience in recycling, waste management, scrap metal, manufacturing, transfer stations, or similar industrial operations.
  • Experience managing managers/supervisors and overseeing multiple departments, facilities, or operating functions.
  • Strong experience with budgeting, cost control, financial performance, and operational metrics.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent education and experience considered.
  • Ability to travel between facilities as needed.

Preferred Experience

  • Recycling, scrap metal, waste transfer, or related material-processing operations.
  • Multi-site operational leadership.
  • Heavy equipment and industrial maintenance programs.
  • Environmental permitting, stormwater compliance, and regulatory inspections.
  • Operational improvement initiatives and development of strong management teams.
