VDC Manager, Electrical Construction

Location: Dallas–Fort Worth, TX

Employment type: Full time

Industry: Electrical construction (mission-critical data centers, commercial, industrial)

About the Company

Our client is an established electrical contractor in the Dallas area. It self-performs complex electrical and technology work for mission-critical data centers and commercial and industrial facilities, and runs a growing in-house prefabrication operation. Its VDC group sits at the center of how projects get planned, coordinated and built.

Position Summary

The VDC Manager leads the company's virtual design and construction program. This person owns the BIM strategy, standards and coordination work from preconstruction through closeout.

This is a hands-on leadership role. The VDC Manager:

  • Manages a team of VDC coordinators and modelers.
  • Works closely with project managers, superintendents, estimators and prefab.
  • Makes sure every model turns into work that can actually be built and installed in the field.

Key Responsibilities

VDC Leadership

  • Lead, mentor and develop the VDC team, including coordinators, modelers and detailers.
  • Assign work, set priorities and balance resources across several projects at once.
  • Build and maintain company-wide VDC standards, templates, content libraries and workflows.
  • Evaluate and roll out new tools and processes that improve speed, accuracy and coordination.

Coordination and Modeling

  • Lead MEP coordination and clash detection with general contractors, engineers and other trades.
  • Oversee detailed electrical models for power distribution, medium- and low-voltage systems, raceway, cable tray, lighting and low-voltage/technology systems.
  • Support 4D sequencing and model-based planning for complex, fast-track projects.
  • Make sure models meet project requirements, client standards and the company's quality expectations.

Prefabrication and Field Support

  • Produce prefab and spool drawings for assemblies built in-house, such as panels, racks, conduit bends and multi-trade assemblies.
  • Coordinate with the prefab shop on fabrication schedules, material needs and delivery sequencing.
  • Support field teams with layout data, model reviews, RFIs and as-built documentation.

Preconstruction and Project Support

  • Provide model-based quantities and constructability input to estimating and preconstruction.
  • Join design-assist and preconstruction meetings to find risks and savings early.
  • Track VDC schedules and deliverables against project milestones and report progress to project leadership.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of BIM/VDC experience with an electrical or MEP specialty contractor, including at least 2 years leading a team or managing VDC work across multiple projects.
  • Expert Revit and Navisworks skills; experience with AutoCAD, Autodesk Construction Cloud/BIM 360, electrical add-ins and layout tools (robotic total stations or similar) preferred.
  • Data center or mission-critical coordination experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, installation methods and construction sequencing.
  • Experience creating prefab and spool drawings and supporting a fabrication shop.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to lead coordination meetings and work well with PMs, field leaders, GCs and design teams.
  • Organized and detail-oriented, able to manage competing deadlines on fast-paced projects.
  • Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.

What's Offered

  • A leadership role with real influence over how the company plans and builds.
  • Steady data center and mission-critical work in one of the busiest construction markets in the country.
  • Close ties between VDC, prefab and the field, so your work shows up in installed results.
