Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Fleet Maintenance Manager to oversee the maintenance and reliability of a fleet of heavy trucks, mobile equipment, and recycling/processing machinery.
This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for preventive maintenance, repairs, DOT compliance, shop operations, and the maintenance team. The primary focus is maximizing equipment uptime while controlling maintenance and repair costs.
Equipment Includes
- Roll-off and hook-lift trucks
- Tractor-trailers, flatbeds, and dump trailers
- Material handlers with grapples and magnets
- Wheel loaders and excavators with shears
- Skid steers and forklifts
- Balers, shears, scales, and other processing equipment
Responsibilities
Maintenance & Reliability
- Develop and manage preventive maintenance programs for trucks, mobile equipment, and stationary machinery.
- Oversee troubleshooting and repairs involving diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, drivetrains, brakes, and attachments.
- Prioritize breakdowns based on operational impact and ensure critical equipment is returned to service quickly.
- Determine when equipment should be repaired internally, outsourced, or replaced.
- Manage outside repair vendors, dealers, and service providers.
Fleet Compliance & Safety
- Maintain compliance with FMCSA/DOT maintenance and inspection requirements.
- Oversee annual inspections, DVIRs, maintenance records, and out-of-service repairs.
- Maintain required vehicle inspection, registration, and IFTA/IRP documentation.
- Support shop safety, lockout/tagout procedures, spill prevention, and proper fluid/waste handling.
- Assist with DOT inspections and audits.
Team Leadership
- Lead, train, schedule, and evaluate diesel mechanics, equipment technicians, welders/fabricators, and shop personnel.
- Establish clear expectations for safety, workmanship, productivity, and accountability.
- Ensure the maintenance shop, tools, lifts, and service equipment remain organized and properly maintained.
- Train drivers and equipment operators on pre-trip and daily equipment inspections.
Cost & Maintenance Planning
- Manage maintenance expenses including parts, labor, tires, fuel, and outside repairs.
- Utilize fleet maintenance software and telematics to track equipment performance.
- Monitor PM compliance, equipment uptime, open work orders, and maintenance cost per mile/hour.
- Manage parts inventory and vendor relationships.
- Make recommendations regarding equipment replacement and assist with specifications for new trucks and machinery.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience maintaining heavy trucks and heavy equipment.
- 3+ years of experience supervising mechanics or maintenance technicians.
- Strong hands-on knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and equipment diagnostics.
- Experience developing or managing preventive maintenance programs.
- Working knowledge of FMCSA/DOT maintenance and inspection requirements.
- Experience with computerized maintenance or fleet management systems.
- Ability and willingness to work hands-on when needed.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Prefered
- Experience in scrap metal, recycling, waste, demolition, construction, aggregates, or another heavy industrial environment.
- Class A CDL.
- ASE certifications and/or DOT annual inspector qualification.
- Experience maintaining material handlers, loaders, excavators, and heavy-duty trucks.
- Welding and fabrication experience.
