Lead Electrical Commissioning Engineer

Location: National Travel Required

Employment Type: Full-Time

Travel: Up to 75%

We are seeking a seasoned Lead Electrical Commissioning Engineer to lead the commissioning, testing, verification, and turnover of mission-critical electrical systems. This role will serve as the on-site electrical commissioning lead, coordinating with owners, general contractors, electrical contractors, design teams, and project stakeholders to ensure systems are installed, tested, documented, and operating in accordance with project requirements.

The ideal candidate brings a strong electrical engineering foundation, data-center or mission-critical commissioning experience, and hands-on expertise with high-, medium-, and low-voltage electrical distribution systems.

Responsibilities

• Lead electrical commissioning activities from Level 1 through Level 5, including planning, scheduling, test-script development, execution, documentation, and final turnover.
• Coordinate daily with owners, general contractors, electrical contractors, design teams, vendors, and commissioning personnel.
• Lead commissioning meetings, daily field coordination, testing schedules, and progress reporting.
• Verify installation compliance with the Basis of Design, Owner’s Project Requirements, electrical drawings, specifications, manufacturer requirements, and applicable codes.
• Perform field inspections and validate equipment installation, wiring, grounding, torqueing, relays, breakers, transformers, controls, and associated electrical components.
• Develop and execute functional performance tests, load-bank and load-soak plans, power-quality testing, and equipment startup procedures.
• Conduct testing of switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, relays, busway, UPS systems, generators, PDUs, RPPs, and other critical electrical infrastructure.
• Support short-circuit, coordination, and protective-device testing to confirm proper electrical system protection and fault response.
• Oversee QA/QC activities within the assigned area and identify, track, and resolve commissioning deficiencies.
• Produce daily reports, testing records, commissioning documentation, issue logs, final reports, and closeout packages.
• Provide operational training and turnover support to owner and facility-maintenance personnel.
• Ensure all work complies with NFPA 70E, OSHA requirements, project safety plans, and company safety procedures.
• Manage travel and expense reporting in accordance with company policy.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required.
• 3–5+ years of electrical commissioning experience, preferably supporting data centers, mission-critical facilities, or other complex electrical infrastructure.
• Strong knowledge of high-voltage substations, medium-voltage switchgear, low-voltage switchgear, busway, UPS systems, generators, PDUs, RPPs, transformers, protective relays, and circuit breakers.
• Experience developing and executing Level 2–Level 5 commissioning scripts and test procedures.
• Experience with load-bank testing, load-soak testing, electrical functional testing, power-quality testing, and protection/coordination testing.
• Knowledge of NFPA 70E, OSHA standards, electrical safe-work practices, and required PPE.
• Ability to interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, equipment submittals, test procedures, and technical specifications.
• Strong organizational, troubleshooting, communication, documentation, and stakeholder-management skills.
• Proficiency with CAD, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and relevant commissioning or project-management tools.
• Ability to travel nationally up to 75% and work on active construction sites.

Work Environment

• Ability to work 8–10 hours per day and 40–50 hours per week, based on project requirements.
• Work may occur in active construction environments, restricted spaces, and outdoor conditions.
• Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment, including hard hat, safety glasses, and respirator when required.
• Must be able to comply with all site-access, safety, and jobsite conduct requirements.
