Shredder Maintenance Supervisor
The Shredder Maintenance Supervisor leads all maintenance activities for a high-volume metal shredding operation, ensuring equipment reliability, safe operations, and maximum production uptime. This role oversees preventive and corrective maintenance programs, coordinates major repairs and outages, manages maintenance personnel and contractors, and partners closely with operations to support daily production goals. The supervisor also drives safety compliance, regulatory requirements, inventory control, and workforce performance.
Responsibilities
- Direct daily maintenance operations for the shredder and supporting processing equipment to maximize equipment availability and minimize downtime.
- Develop and prioritize preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance schedules based on operational needs and equipment condition.
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee major maintenance projects, shutdowns, rebuilds, and capital repair initiatives.
- Monitor inventory levels for critical spare parts, wear components, and maintenance supplies to ensure operational readiness.
- Partner with production leadership to coordinate maintenance activities while minimizing disruption to plant throughput.
- Supervise internal maintenance employees as well as outside contractors performing repair and construction work.
- Ensure mobile equipment inspections, maintenance, and repair activities are completed and communicated across departments.
- Promote a strong safety culture by leading daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, and ongoing employee training.
- Ensure compliance with environmental, health, safety, and regulatory requirements, including inspections, documentation, corrective actions, and incident investigations.
- Track maintenance performance, prepare operational reports, and communicate equipment status, priorities, and critical updates to plant and regional leadership.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and compliance documentation.
- Build positive working relationships with a union workforce while supporting employee development, accountability, and performance management.
- Assist with employee coaching, scheduling, performance discussions, and corrective action when necessary.
Qualifications
- Experience supervising maintenance operations in a heavy industrial manufacturing, recycling, aggregate, mining, steel, foundry, or similar environment.
- Strong knowledge of industrial mechanical systems, hydraulics, conveyors, shredders, heavy processing equipment, and mobile equipment.
- Experience planning preventive maintenance programs and coordinating large repair projects.
- Familiarity with maintenance planning, spare parts inventory, and contractor management.
- Working knowledge of OSHA and environmental compliance requirements.
- Experience leading safety initiatives, inspections, and incident investigations.
- Previous experience working in a union manufacturing or industrial environment is preferred.
- Strong organizational, leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with maintenance management systems (CMMS) and Microsoft Office applications.
