Steel Plate, Sheet & Structural Fabrication Estimator Requirements & Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of estimating experience in steel fabrication, structural steel, plate fabrication, or related manufacturing environments.
- Demonstrated experience preparing estimates from customer drawings and specifications.
- Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication practices, plate and sheet metal manufacturing processes, welding methods, and material grades/specifications.
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Business, or equivalent industry experience.
- Ability to read and interpret structural and fabrication drawings, welding symbols, and engineering specifications.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
- Excellent mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Steel Plate, Sheet & Structural Fabrication Estimator Preferred Background & Skills
- Direct experience estimating projects for the petrochemical, energy, industrial, marine, heavy equipment, or infrastructure sectors.
- Familiarity with AISC standards and AWS welding codes.
- Experience using estimating and fabrication software such as Bluebeam, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), AutoCAD/Revit, SolidWorks, or NetSuite ERP.
- Knowledge of the Houston Gulf Coast industrial markets and client base.
Steel Plate, Sheet & Structural Fabrication Estimator Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Interpret and review customer drawings, specifications, and bid documents for steel plate, sheet, and structural fabrication projects.
- Develop detailed, accurate cost estimates for fabricated steel, including labor, material, subcontractor, and equipment costs.
- Perform material take-offs and labor calculations for fabrication processes (cutting, forming, welding, assembly, inspection, etc.).
- Obtain competitive quotes from suppliers, subcontractors, and outside processors.
- Prepare comprehensive proposals, quotations, and bid summaries with clear clarifications and risk assessments.
- Coordinate with engineering, production, and project management teams to ensure manufacturability and optimize fabrication methods.
- Support bid review presentations, scope negotiations, and project handoff activities to operations.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
