Primary Responsibilities
- Prototype new designs using 3D printing and rapid prototyping to evaluate form, fit, and function.
- Lead mechanical engineering design from concept through production, applying sound engineering principles to ensure performance, reliability, manufacturability, and validation readiness; develop supporting models and drawings as required.
- Collaborate with overseas contract manufacturers, including occasional international travel, to ensure manufacturability, cost effectiveness, and adherence to design intent.
- Lead or participate in Design FMEA and Process FMEA sessions to proactively identify and mitigate product and process risks.
- Collaborate with Quality Team on creating and evaluating product test plans to verify that products meet performance, durability, and safety standards.
- Partner with contract manufacturers to improve product quality, troubleshoot issues, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
Product Management
- Participate in user research and field testing with law enforcement and other end users.
- Translate user feedback into actionable customer requirements that guide product design and performance targets.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Marketing, Sales, Operations, Quality, and others in the Engineering organization to align design intent with market needs and launch timelines.
Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, product design, or a related technical discipline.
- 2–5 years of experience in product design and development.
- Hands-on design experience with pneumatic or fluid power systems (e.g., valves, seals, regulators, accumulators, pressure vessels, or impact mechanisms).
- Experience bringing products through the full development lifecycle, from early concept and prototyping through validation, manufacturing ramp, and market launch.
- Experience performing tolerance stack-up analysis and applying DFM/DFA principles to ensure robust fit, function, manufacturability, and efficient assembly across production variation.
- Proven root cause analysis and structured problem-solving experience (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone, fault tree) to resolve design, manufacturing, and field issues through validation and production ramp.
- Experience developing, executing, and supporting product validation, durability testing, pilot builds, and manufacturing ramp-up in collaboration with quality, operations, and global suppliers.
- Working knowledge of Design and Process FMEA principles.
- Experience collaborating with global contract manufacturers.
- Ability and willingness to travel internationally to support design reviews, supplier visits, and product validation.
- Proven ability to act as a change agent, introducing structure, process, and continuous improvement methodologies that enhance team efficiency and product outcomes.
- Strong analytical, communication, and project management skills.
- Passion for designing innovative, reliable, and field-ready products that make a real impact.
- Physical Requirements: Must be able to safely lift and move moderate-weight items (up to 30–40 lbs.) as required for prototype handling and testing.
