Crane Operator – Scrap Yard
The Crane Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating material-handling cranes to move, load, and sort ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal throughout the yard. This role directly supports production, shipping/receiving, and processing goals while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate hydraulic material handlers (magnet or grapple) to move, stack, and load/unload scrap metal
- Load shredders, shear lines, balers, and downstream conveyors with appropriate material flow
- Sort and separate scrap to prevent contamination between ferrous and non-ferrous streams
- Load outgoing trailers, railcars, or barges to weight and quality specifications
- Perform daily pre-shift inspections and minor maintenance on assigned crane
- Coordinate movements with scale house, torch crews, and ground spotters to maintain traffic flow and safety
- Maintain constant awareness of surroundings to prevent equipment or property damage
- Record loads and production counts as required by supervisors
- Assist with yard clean-up and equipment relocation as needed
Qualifications
- Prior experience operating material handlers or cranes in a scrap, recycling, or heavy industrial environment
- Valid crane or material-handler certification/license (as required)
- Strong knowledge of rigging, lifting, and safety procedures
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and lift up to 50 lbs
- Excellent hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and communication skills
- Commitment to safety, punctuality, and teamwork
Work Environment
- Outdoor scrap yard environment
- Exposure to noise, dust, sharp metal, and heavy machinery traffic
- Requires wearing PPE (hard hat, steel-toe boots, high-visibility vest, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection)
