The CNC Programmer develops the programs and manufacturing instructions used to produce machined parts and sub-assemblies on horizontal and vertical machining centers, in line with engineering drawings and specifications. The role sets process sequences and defines tooling, gauging, and machine needs, mostly for aluminum castings and some aluminum billet. The programmer also works on the shop floor with the team to solve problems and improve processes.
CNC Programmer Responsibilities
- Write medium- to high-complexity CNC programs in 3+ axis CAM software, working offline and simulating at the PC so programs run collision-free and minimize machine time.
- Support CAM operations: load programs to controls, assist with setup and prove-out, secure first-piece approval, and hand production over to the operator.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot programs, and modify existing ones to improve efficiency.
- Review drawings and specifications for manufacturability, and recommend changes that boost productivity.
- Study how parts are made and recommend improvements to equipment, methods, materials, and designs.
- Partner with Quality to build reliable CMM and manual inspection processes.
- Produce setup and work instructions for machinists, and maintain records such as tooling lists.
- Verify programs through simulation before posting code, and set speeds and feeds from manufacturer cutting data.
- Support the ISO quality management system.
- Follow all safety policies, wear PPE, and keep the work area clean.
- Maintain reliable attendance, follow company policies and standards of conduct, and stay professional with internal and external contacts.
CNC Programmer Qualifications
- AAS in a mechanical technology field, or equivalent experience and a proven ability to program and machine complex geometry.
- About four years of CNC programming experience preferred, ideally with Mastercam.
- Strong CNC programming and blueprint-reading skills.
- Solid math skills (algebra, trigonometry, physics) and good problem-solving ability.
- Excellent time management, organization, planning, and written and verbal communication.
- Highly detail-oriented, able to work with little supervision, and knowledgeable about job-related safety measures.
- The role alternates between walking and prolonged desk work. You must be able to lift up to 35 pounds as needed.
