Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and dependable Garbage Truck Mechanic / Diesel Fleet Mechanic to maintain, diagnose, and repair refuse trucks and other commercial fleet equipment.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, brakes, suspension, and heavy-duty truck maintenance. This position plays a critical role in keeping trucks safe, reliable, and available for daily routes.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain garbage/refuse trucks and other commercial vehicles.
- Perform preventive maintenance and scheduled fleet inspections.
- Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, and drivetrain components.
- Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, cylinders, hoses, valves, and related components.
- Diagnose electrical and electronic issues, including starting, charging, lighting, sensors, and wiring systems.
- Maintain and repair refuse-body equipment, compactors, lifts, arms, tailgates, and related components.
- Perform DOT-related inspections and identify potential safety concerns.
- Complete oil changes, fluid services, filter replacements, lubrication, and other routine maintenance.
- Repair or replace worn and damaged components.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns and assist with emergency repairs when necessary.
- Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
- Communicate vehicle conditions and repair needs to management and operations.
- Maintain a clean and organized shop and work area.
- Follow OSHA, DOT, environmental, and company safety procedures.
- Assist with maintaining parts and shop inventory.
- Perform other maintenance duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a diesel mechanic, heavy-duty truck mechanic, fleet mechanic, or heavy-equipment mechanic.
- Experience working with Class 7 or Class 8 commercial vehicles preferred.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines and heavy-duty vehicle systems.
- Hydraulic troubleshooting and repair experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with air brake systems.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems.
- Ability to use diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams, service manuals, and technical information.
- Valid driver's license required.
- CDL Class A or B is preferred but may not be required.
- ASE or manufacturer certifications are a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift approximately 50–75 pounds as required.
- Ability to bend, kneel, crawl, climb, and work underneath commercial vehicles.
- Ability to work in a shop environment and outdoors when necessary.
- Ability to safely operate tools and heavy shop equipment.
- Comfortable working around diesel vehicles, oils, grease, hydraulic fluids, and other automotive materials.
Ideal Candidate
The strongest candidate will be a hands-on mechanic who can diagnose problems rather than simply replace parts. Refuse trucks experience demanding daily use, so the mechanic must be comfortable troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems while prioritizing vehicle safety and uptime.
