Senior Legal Counsel Requirements & Qualifications
- 10+ years of corporate transactional commercial real estate legal experience
- Significant experience in retail and shopping center real estate transactions
- Demonstrated expertise across the full real estate lifecycle: acquisitions, development, leasing, and dispositions
- Direct experience with big-box retailers, anchor tenants, and institutional commercial real estate owners, developers, REITs, or law firms
- Strong background in drafting and negotiating complex agreements, including reciprocal easement agreements (REAs), operating agreements, leases, and development/disposition documents
- Exceptional negotiation, communication, and relationship management skills
- Ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal counsel to internal stakeholders
Senior Legal Counsel Preferred Background & Skills
- Familiarity with large-scale redevelopment and mixed-use projects
- Experience advising on legal risk for national portfolios or transformation projects
- Previous mentorship or leadership of junior attorneys and legal staff
Senior Legal Counsel Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Lead and negotiate complex commercial real estate transactions—including acquisitions, development, redevelopment, leasing, and dispositions
- Draft, review, and advise on sophisticated shopping center and retail leases, REAs, and development agreements
- Support major retail and mixed-use redevelopment projects from inception through completion
- Advise business and development leaders on legal and commercial risks, finding practical solutions for complex issues
- Collaborate with internal legal and business teams, outside counsel, tenants, and developers on major deals
- Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced attorneys and paralegals
