- High-impact leadership opportunity to build and establish the company’s internal controllership function from the ground up
- Work primarily from home with purposeful visits to stores and offices when needed.
- Significant autonomy reporting directly to the CEO and operating as the financial owner of the organization without day-to-day micromanagement
- Direct influence on the business by providing leadership with financial insight that directly impacts store performance, growth, and strategic decisions
- Growth opportunity in playing a foundational role in building the finance and accounting infrastructure as the organization continues to scale
Controller Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required, with 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience and 3–5 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role
- Proven experience with multi-unit, multi-entity, franchise, retail, or similarly distributed operations
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial statement preparation, reconciliations, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage a five-day month-end close and deliver accurate, timely financial reporting
- Cannabis accounting experience strongly preferred, including knowledge of IRC Section 280E, California cannabis regulations, METRC, inventory accounting, and cannabis-related tax requirements
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with ERP/accounting systems, including the ability to improve or implement accounting and reporting processes
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, self-directed, and comfortable working remotely while developing strong relationships with GMs and operational leaders across multiple locations
Controller Responsibilities
- Lead all accounting operations, including the general ledger, AP/AR, payroll accounting, fixed assets, cash management, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial close
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, management reporting, store-level reporting, and financial analysis for the CEO and ownership
- Build and manage a five-day month-end close process across nine locations while establishing accounting policies, procedures, and documentation
- Develop annual budgets, rolling forecasts, variance analysis, cash-flow reporting, and financial insights to support operational and strategic decision-making
- Oversee inventory and cost accounting, including inventory valuation, costing, inventory reconciliations, POS-to-accounting reconciliation, and reconciliation of accounting records with METRC and operational data
- Establish and strengthen internal controls, financial processes, tax compliance, and regulatory reporting, including coordination with external CPA, tax, audit, banking, and compliance partners
- Partner with the CEO, ownership, and store GMs to identify financial risks, improve profitability and controls, establish accountability, and build a scalable accounting infrastructure for future growth
