Payroll & Benefits Manager Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Accounting, Finance, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of experience in payroll and benefits administration, including multi-state U.S. payroll and Canadian payroll exposure
- Experience working with external payroll vendors in a coordinated processing model
- Strong knowledge of 401(k) plan administration and U.S. benefits regulations; familiarity with Canadian benefits highly preferred
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple payroll cycles and complex pay group structures
- High attention to detail, discretion with confidential information, and strong analytical skills
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
Payroll & Benefits Manager Preferred Background & Skills
- CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) or CEBS certification
- Experience in a multi-entity or multi-national environment
- Familiarity with HRIS and benefits administration platforms
Payroll & Benefits Manager Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Manage weekly and bi-weekly payroll operations for 6 pay groups in the U.S. and Canada, including commissions, bonuses, and tips
- Direct payroll vendor relationships, validating reports, resolving discrepancies, and ensuring regulatory compliance
- Oversee all benefits programs (medical, dental, vision, retirement, and voluntary offerings) from strategy through administration
- Lead annual open enrollment, manage benefits vendors and brokers, and oversee eligibility, enrollment, and life-event changes
- Ensure ongoing compliance with U.S. and Canadian payroll and benefits regulations
- Partner with HR, Finance, and the payroll vendor to handle payroll-related and benefit inquiries, adjustments, and reporting
- Lead year-end activities and drive process improvements in payroll and benefits administration
