Job Title: Chief Engineer – Small Ship Expedition Cruising
Location: Seattle, WA (Shipyard) / Rotational Schedule in Alaska
Schedule: Winter Shipyard (Seattle) prep leading into Summer Alaska Season
Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Chief Engineer to join our small-ship expedition cruise team. This unique role begins in a Seattle shipyard during the winter months, preparing the vessel for the upcoming Summer Alaska Sailing Season, followed by a rotational schedule once the season begins.
The Chief Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and repair of all vessel systems. On our larger vessels, the Chief Engineer will manage and supervise the Assistant Engineer. Reporting directly to the Master of the vessel, the Chief Engineer assists in communicating and enforcing all company policies and procedures to ensure a safe, smooth, and environmentally responsible operation.

Chief Engineer Job Requirements
Required Qualifications & Experience:
- Maritime Engineering School Graduate in good standing and/or a Designated Duty Engineer License (or equivalent) preferred.
- Minimum of two years’ experience as an Engineer onboard similar sized passenger vessels preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of diesel propulsion and electrical generating systems, fuel centrifuges, air compressors, pumps, hydraulics, water makers, hotel systems, plumbing, refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, SharePoint).
- Strong time management skills: ability to handle multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Proven crisis management skills: ability to work well under pressure, acting quickly and decisively using sound judgment.
- Must maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
Required Certificates, Licenses & Registrations:
- Government ID (REAL ID Compliant) or Passport
- CPR / First Aid / AED Certification
- Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
Preferred Certificates, Licenses & Registrations:
- STCW Basic Training
- STCW Crowd Management
- STCW Crisis Management
- STCW Medical First Aid Provider
- Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD)
- STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft
- STCW Advanced Fire Fighting
- Designated Duty Engineer (DDE) 1000hp or higher
- Qualified Member of the Engineering Department (QMED)
- Shipyard Competent Person
