Director of Nursing (DON) – Hospice

Are you a compassionate nursing leader with a passion for hospice care? We are seeking an experienced Director of Nursing (DON) to lead our clinical team and ensure the delivery of exceptional end-of-life care for patients and families throughout the Shreveport community.

Position Summary
The Director of Nursing is responsible for overseeing all clinical operations and patient care services within the hospice program. This role provides leadership and supervision to clinical staff, ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, maintains quality standards, and supports organizational growth through strong clinical leadership and community relationships.
The DON serves as a key member of the leadership team and works closely with the Executive Director to ensure operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and exceptional patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership
- Direct and supervise all patient care activities and clinical operations.
- Ensure compliance with accepted nursing standards, hospice regulations, and best practices.
- Oversee quality of care, patient safety, and clinical outcomes.
- Provide guidance and support to nursing and interdisciplinary team members.
- Ensure timely completion of patient assessments, care plans, and clinical documentation.
Staff Management & Development
- Recruit, hire, train, and retain qualified clinical personnel.
- Verify and maintain staff licensure and certification requirements.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching and mentorship.
- Coordinate orientation, ongoing education, and competency training programs.
- Ensure annual employee evaluations and continuing education requirements are met.
Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Maintain compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, state regulations, and accreditation standards.
- Ensure agency policies, procedures, and training materials remain current.
- Monitor clinical documentation and quality assurance activities.
- Investigate complaints, incidents, and compliance concerns as necessary.
- Prepare for and participate in surveys, audits, and accreditation reviews.
Operations & Collaboration
- Maintain availability during normal operating hours and ensure clinical leadership coverage during absences.
- Collaborate with agency leadership to support growth initiatives and operational goals.
- Foster positive relationships with referral sources, healthcare providers, patients, and families.
- Support marketing and community outreach efforts when needed.
- Provide leadership across all clinical service areas and branch locations.
Qualifications
Required
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Louisiana (or Compact License eligible for Louisiana).
- Minimum of three (3) years of RN experience.
- At least one (1) year of direct patient care experience in hospice or home health.
- Previous clinical leadership, supervisory, or management experience.
- Strong knowledge of hospice regulations, Medicare, Medicaid, and accreditation standards.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Proficiency with computers, email, internet applications, and electronic medical records.
Preferred
- Prior Director of Nursing, Clinical Director, Patient Care Manager, or Hospice Leadership experience.
- Experience with Joint Commission (TJC), ACHC, or other accreditation surveys.
- Strong background in staff development and quality improvement initiatives.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, and lift as needed
- Visual acuity sufficient for clinical and administrative responsibilities
- Ability to travel between patient care locations and office settings
