Resident Engineer Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Illinois
- 10+ years of professional engineering experience
- Demonstrated success as a resident engineer on major transportation projects
- Applicable Illinois DOT certification required
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Resident Engineer Preferred Background & Skills
- Strong marketing or business development experience
- Effective communicator with the ability to lead collaborative teams
- Organized, self-motivated, and skilled at managing multiple priorities
- Experience facilitating pre-construction or progress meetings
Resident Engineer Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Oversee construction projects for buildings, roads, and bridges, ensuring on-time, on-budget delivery
- Guide, train, and provide direction to project inspection teams
- Coordinate with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to maintain project alignment
- Review contract documents and ensure compliance with client, company, and regulatory requirements
- Chair pre-construction and construction progress meetings
- Manage project activities such as layout, inspection, documentation, and contractor pay estimates
- Monitor field conditions, resolve design issues, and ensure site safety and quality standards
