Director of Risk Management and Safety Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in risk management, safety, human resources, business, or related field.
- Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in workers’ compensation, risk management, or workplace safety.
- Demonstrated expertise with Hawaii workers’ compensation laws and HIOSH requirements.
- Direct experience partnering with insurance carriers, brokers, TPAs, and legal counsel.
- Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to travel regularly throughout Hawaii and conduct onsite safety inspections.
Director of Risk Management and Safety Preferred Background & Skills
- Experience supporting large, multi-site retail or grocery operations.
- Familiarity with unionized workplaces.
- Background in grocery, retail, distribution, or hospitality sectors.
- Success managing risk and safety programs across multiple business entities.
Director of Risk Management and Safety Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Develop and oversee enterprise risk management and insurance strategies for all business units.
- Lead the workers’ compensation program, ensuring full compliance with Hawaii WC laws, prompt claim handling, and robust return-to-work programs.
- Design, implement, and monitor company-wide safety policies, procedures, and training initiatives.
- Conduct safety audits, incident investigations, and hazard assessments, driving corrective action and continuous improvement.
- Manage and hold third-party vendors, including TPAs and medical providers, accountable to service standards and KPIs.
- Advise senior leadership on risk exposure, cost control measures, and mitigation strategies through regular data analysis and reporting.
- Collaborate closely with Operations, HR, Legal, and Finance to align on compliance, cost savings, and best safety practices.
