Job Summary
The Chief Mate supervises and trains the deck force and assists with the vessel's piloting, navigation, safety, security, and small boat operations — reporting directly to the Master. This is a hands-on leadership role aboard small expedition ships exploring Alaska.
- Lead and evaluate the deck team across docking, anchoring, watch duties, and vessel maintenance
- Assume bridge navigation during scheduled watches; handle the vessel in all conditions
- Serve as Medical Officer — maintain supplies, file injury reports, and coordinate emergency response
- Direct onboard safety drills: fire, abandon ship, man overboard, flooding, and medical scenarios
- Act as Vessel Security Officer and assist with USCG annual inspections and dry docks
- Assume command of the vessel if the Captain becomes incapacitated
- Work 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week, on 6-8 week rotations with 2–3 weeks off between.
Chief Mate Salary & Benefits
Base pay $378 per day (summer season), based on vessel placement. Additional benefits include:

Chief Mate Requirements
Candidates must bring demonstrated maritime leadership experience, with at least 360 sea days of Mate experience on passenger-carrying vessels, supervisory responsibility, and Southeast Alaska port-to-port experience preferred. Required licenses and certificates:
- USCG 100T Master License
- Radar Observer Unlimited
- FCC Marine Radio Operator's Permit
- Valid TWIC
- Advanced Medical Training
- CPR / First Aid / AED
- Medical Certificate
- Government ID (REAL ID compliant) or Passport
