Data Engineer Requirements & Qualifications – this is what will be prioritized during screening:
Must haves:
- 6+ years of experience in data engineering or backend-heavy engineering roles
- Deep expertise in PostgreSQL including schema design, indexing, and performance tuning
- Strong SQL skills across both transactional and analytical workloads
- Proven experience designing or operating a data warehouse
- Experience building ETL/ELT pipelines that feed analytics and search systems
- Experience working with search technologies (OpenSearch or similar)
- Ability to evaluate and apply the right data storage solutions based on workload and performance needs
- Strong coding ability with willingness to work in JavaScript/TypeScript environments
- Experience working with large-scale, messy, real-world datasets
What you’ll actually be doing (day-to-day impact):
- Restructuring and optimizing PostgreSQL environments to separate OLTP and analytics workloads
- Designing and implementing a scalable data warehouse and search architecture
- Defining how data is distributed across operational databases, search systems, and analytical platforms
- Building reliable, observable, and replayable data pipelines
- Improving data quality through validation, deduplication, and anomaly detection
- Making architectural decisions on data storage, migration, and system design
- Serving as the technical authority on data architecture without direct people management
- Leveraging AI tools to improve schema design, query performance, and data validation while ensuring accuracy and integrity
Data Engineer Preferred Background & Skills:
- Experience migrating analytics and search workloads off production systems
- Exposure to data observability and data quality tooling
- Background in high-volume consumer platforms or marketplace data environments
- Experience working with datasets at hundreds of millions to billions of records
- Familiarity with document or columnar data stores and when to apply them
- Strong sense of ownership with a pragmatic, solution-oriented mindset
- Ability to balance performance, cost, scalability, and system complexity in decision-making
