Controller

This is an exciting opportunity for a financial steward to oversee accounting and reporting functions while supporting strategic decision-making in a collaborative, non-hierarchical environment. Controller Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or CMA strongly preferred.
- 6–8 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a nonprofit financial role.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, and fund accounting.
- Experience leading audits, building budgets, and preparing financial statements.
- Proficiency with accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Ramp) and strong Excel skills.
Controller Preferred Background & Skills
- Comfortable working in a start-up environment, including building and refining systems and managing ambiguity.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in financial and operational practices.
- Passion for climate, sustainability, or clean energy advocacy is a plus.
Controller Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and month-end close.
- Prepare timely, accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for leadership and the Board.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards, especially around restricted funds and grant reporting.
- Lead annual audit preparation and manage collaboration with external auditors.
- Monitor budgets and provide clear variance analysis, scenario planning, and mid-year course corrections.
- Collaborate with accounting contractors and partner with the COO to translate financial data into accessible insights for decision-making.
