Machining Manager – Steel Manufacturing

📍 Location: Chicago, IL

Lead a High-Performance Steel Machining Team!

Are you an expert in steel machining with a passion for leading teams, optimizing production, and driving efficiency? We’re looking for a Machining Manager to oversee our high-volume steel machining operations, manage a large team of machinists, and implement process improvements that boost quality and productivity.

🔹 What You’ll Do:

Manage Steel Machining Operations – Oversee large-scale CNC machining, lathes, mills, and steel-cutting tools in a high-volume manufacturing environment

Lead & Develop Teams – Supervise ~90 machinists and 6 sub-departments, including union machine operators

Drive Process Improvements – Optimize tooling selection, cycle times, cutting speeds, and machining KPIs (Cubic Inch Removal Rate, Squares Cut Rate, etc.)

Ensure Quality & Compliance – Maintain ISO/IATF standards, implement Six Sigma practices, and collaborate with Quality Control

Control Costs & Boost Efficiency – Reduce scrap, extend tool life, and manage departmental budgets, including tooling and maintenance costs

Ensure Safety & Compliance – Promote a safety-first culture, conduct audits, and ensure adherence to OSHA and company regulations


🔹 What We’re Looking For:

Experience:

  • 5+ years of machining management experience in a steel manufacturing environment
  • Hands-on experience with CNC lathes, mills, and heavy-duty steel cutting
  • Strong background in steel machining processes, tooling selection, and production optimization
  • Union workforce management experience (preferred)

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software, CNC programming, and ERP/MRP systems (SAP a plus)
  • Expertise in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement methodologies
  • Strong knowledge of machining KPIs, tooling costs, and steel material processing

Leadership & Problem-Solving:

  • Ability to motivate and lead large teams in a high-paced environment
  • Strong decision-making, troubleshooting, and process improvement skills
  • Excellent communication and cross-department collaboration abilities

🔹 Work Environment:

🏭 On-site in a steel manufacturing facility – exposure to industrial equipment, noise, and heat

🏋️ Must be able to lift, push, and pull at least 50 lbs
