Project Accountant Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field preferred.
  • 3-5 years of construction experience required.
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s project tracking systems, including Smartsheet, Google, and MS Office.
  • Thorough knowledge of project life cycle.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to the needs of the organization, prioritize tasks and delegate.
  • Detail-oriented and organized.
  • Ability to thrive under pressure in a fast-paced environment, with a high sense of urgency and ownership of work, and a demonstrated ability to manage deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Project Accountant Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing payroll time entries for accuracy and posting to respective jobs.
  • Investigating any unbilled project costs to ensure completeness.
  • Maintaining financial project files for proper documentation.
  • Assisting in the financial aspects of project close-out procedures.
  • Tracking project status and ensuring timely processing of progress billings.
  • Conducting job cost analysis and reporting on project status, actual versus budget variances, profitability, and percentage complete.
  • Managing the Work in Progress (WIP) schedule and backlog reporting.
  • Supporting purchase order processes and controls with operations, ensuring accurate recording of costs.
  • Monitoring committed costs on projects to maintain financial accuracy.
  • Closing out month-end tasks, including preparing interim financial statements.
  • Ensuring estimates in the accounting system reflect contracts and change orders accurately.
  • Preparing reporting materials for weekly project meetings.
  • Maintaining steady cash flow by generating, auditing, and sending invoices promptly.
