Trailer Mechanic Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Preferably one to three years of experience as an automotive mechanic
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required
  • Familiarity with machines, tools, their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Understanding of safety protocols for handling hazardous waste materials and maintaining workplace safety
  • Knowledge of equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies for ensuring safe and efficient technical operations in vehicular mechanics
  • Understanding of materials, methods, and tools used in constructing and repairing truck and trailer systems
  • Familiarity with circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming
  • Welding certification is advantageous

Responsibilities of Trailer Mechanic:

  • Inspects vehicles to assess the extent of damage or malfunction
  • Services, repairs, adjusts, and tests machines, equipment, and devices with moving parts to ensure proper mechanical operation
  • Repairs, relines, replaces, and adjusts brakes
  • Observes and tests system operations using gauges and instruments
  • Disassembles malfunctioning systems and tests components using mechanical and pneumatic testing equipment
  • Adjusts and replaces worn or defective mechanisms and parts, then reassembles repaired systems
  • Follows checklists to examine all critical parts, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brakes, fuel systems, wheel bearings, and other potentially problematic areas, repairing and replacing them as necessary
  • Evaluates and adjusts repaired systems to meet manufacturer performance specifications
  • Performs routine maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrication, and tune-ups
  • Overhauls or replaces carburetors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps, and repairs and services air conditioning, heating, engine-cooling, and electrical systems
  • Replaces or repairs shock absorbers and aligns vehicles' front ends
  • Adheres to established security and safety policies and procedures
  • Performs additional duties and special projects as required or directed
